It is interesting to note the three messages that the North Vietnamese government used to try to dissuade U.S. Service members from fighting.
1. "Refuse to take part in mop up and rescue operations".
2. "Demand their immediate repatriation."
3. "Let themselves be captured by Liberation forces. All prisoners will be given humane treatment."
The North Vietnamese knew that any sucessful rescue operations would disprove their "humanitarian treatment of prisoners".
